Things to Check Before Buying Gold, Gemstone and Diamond Jewellery
Since buying jewellery is considered a form of investment and is traditionally passed through generations as a buyer it would be wise to check a few things before buying precious gold, colour gemstone and diamond jewellery.
What should I check before buying gold jewellery?
It would help if you asked the jeweller about the purity of the gold used in the jewellery. Then check the BIS Hallmark imprinted on the jewellery before buying.
BIS hallmark on gold jewellery consists of three symbols:
a) BIS logo (the logo is in the shape of a triangle).
b) Purity/Fineness Grade (it is mentioned as 22K916, 18K750, 14K585)
c) 6-digit alpha-numeric code, also known as HUID number (e.g. 75DF6N)
What should I check before buying coloured gemstone jewellery?
First and foremost, as discussed above check the presence of the Hallmark on the jewellery, then ask the jeweller if the colour stone used in the jewellery are real, synthetic or artificial.
What should I check before buying a piece of diamond jewellery?
Diamond Jewellery is preferably made in 18 Karat or 14 Karat gold, so check the Hallmark in the jewellery.
After that ask about the jeweller the details of the diamonds used in the jewellery. Always insist on a diamond jewellery certificate from a recognized laboratory.
The jewellery certificate is a report of the diamond jewellery and it is usually in the form of a card with all the details mentioned in it.
The certificate has a number which can be verified on the website of the laboratory issuing that certificate.
The certificate includes the following details of the jewellery:
- Photo
- Gold used: purity of gold mentioned in Karat and its gross gold weight.
- The nature of the diamonds studded in that jewellery which is the
- Shape and cut,
- colour, clarity (grade),
- weight (in carats) and number of diamonds and
- it also states that the diamonds are natural.
So, a certificate offers credibility to your diamond jewellery.
Many jewellers usually have printed price tags having all the details, attached to the jewellery. But to avoid being cheated from a few jewellers selling fake goods it is always wise and safe to ask a few questions and check everything yourself before buying jewellery.
